Tuulikki Bartosik, a Swedish-Estonian musician, renowned for her innovative approach to the accordion (which btw is GORGEOUS in blue), seamlessly blending traditional Baltic sounds with contemporary influences. Her work has drawn comparisons to neoclassical composers like Philip Glass and minimalist artists such as Ólafur Arnalds¹. But forget all that, Tuuliki is FRESH!
Background and Musical Journey So Far
Bartosik’s music is deeply rooted in the rich cultural landscapes of Estonia and Sweden. And you can hear it, it’s a big sound and it.is.magical. Over the years she’s developed a distinctive style that incorporates field recordings and electroacoustic elements, reflecting a spatious and adventurous spirit; and given how much she experiments with her music… it seems Tuulikki has an insatiable curiosity as well.
Discography and Collaborations
Throughout her career, Bartosik has released several albums that showcase an evolving sound:
- Storied Sounds: This debut album offers a collection of tunes inspired by Estonian landscapes and personal experiences³.
- Chatterbox: This one was a collaborative project with English accordionist Hannah James, blending traditional and contemporary styles³. Hannah is also a vibe btw, check her out too.
- Upa-upa ubinakõnõ: An album created with Estonian singer-songwriter Mari Kalkun and multi-instrumentalist Pastacas, highlighting the trio’s synergy³.
- Tempest in a Teapot: An introspective album that intertwines Bartosik’s accordion compositions with poetic lyrics³.
The most recent addition to her catalogue is the enchanting Playscapes:
- Playscapes was co-created with Sander Mölder and explores sonic landscapes inspired by a bunch of different cities and the experiences that were had here and there³. Ah y’know, life!
Bartosik also collaborated with Swedish saxophonist Jonas Knutsson, Finnish pianist Timo Alakotila, and English accordionist Hannah James. We haven’t… but you might want to look it up, because it might be dope! ⁴. 😁
